Balint group leaders need knowledge about:
- psychological processes in individuals and groups;
- general practice;
- the Balint method.
Training generally involves some or all of the following:
- substantial experience as a Balint group participant;
- working with an experienced leader as a co-leader;
- supervision;
- leadership workshops;
- training in psychoanalysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy or group psychotherapy;
- reading.
There are as yet no formal Balint group leader training programs in Australia. However, the Balint Society of Australia provides a variety of professional development opportunities for Balint group leaders.
There are a small number of Balint group leaders in Australia who have trained in many of the above modalities.
The Balint Society of Australia is working towards developing accreditation procedures and training for leaders.
